The JMT route is more difficult, more up and down but the difference in scenery is night and day. I am surprised it's even a question. The PCT stays high because that's what it's supposed to do (Pacific Crest trail). The goal of the trail isn't to be the most scenic and that's why the JMT varies from it at some points.

While a lot of the lakes right off the trail were overfished, once you even got 1 mile from the trail there were tons of fish. I'll throw in another vote for the 10 mile/day pace. We averaged 10 miles per day over all. Our shortest day was 5.5 miles going into Red's for a resupply pickup. Our longest two days were both just over 14 miles. The second day departing MTR and our last day summiting Whitney and exiting at Whitney Portal.

Then from #4 go over Old Army or New Army from Long Lake, (either option comes together right at the top of Old Army, where you either go right to Mt Langley or left to Soldier/Rock) then down to Rock Creek or even as far as Crabtree Meadow.
